Definitely Worth It
This game takes you into the world of Hexen, a world on the brink of destruction by a dark evil. It's up to you to confront this evil and eliminate it.

What really intrigued me to play this game is the Doom-like gameplay it offers, combined with a dark-age atmosphere. The levels are very original and transport you to a hidden castle in a swamp, the sewers, a graveyard, and a cathedral! Especially that last level was incredibly well-designed!.

Unfortunately, this game has some aspects that really work against it.
- The boss fights come unexpectedly and can be really difficult! I had to battle a dark demon magician in the cathedral level, and he was really strong because he could deflect all my attacks. There was also a boss fight against some kind of dragon creature in a lava pit. By the time I got there, I had died about 10 times before realizing that the beast was flying around!
- The backtracking in this game is really over the top. You find an item in the lava world to open a door in the ice world, only to press a button there to open a door in the steel world. There you'll find a portal that teleports you back to the ice world, and the cycle continues. This is the first game where I actually had to use a walkthrough to progress, that's how challenging the backtracking is in this game.
- You can choose to play as one of three characters, each of whom only gets three weapons throughout the game. This is quite disappointing.

Despite these drawbacks, this game is definitely worth it because of the level design, the music that complements it, and especially the ultimate weapons you can find in this game. For instance, the Cleric (highly recommended) has the Wraithverge. This is a kind of staff that releases spirits and tears your enemies apart as if they were made of paper! In all my years of gaming, I have never seen a weapon that provides as much satisfaction to use as that one!

I especially recommend this game to fans of shooting games, but also to fans of adventure games. It's dark and gory, yet adventurous and diverse. It's like Doom in a Zelda coat, but less cheerful and friendly than Zelda.

Fantasy Doom
Similar to Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, and others in this genre, Hexen is also a first-person shooter with puzzles, secret passages, and a wide array of weapons.

For those who have played the original PC port of Hexen, this version might be disappointing (just like Doom 64), but for those who have only experienced Nintendo 64 games, Hexen might come as a surprise.

Hexen has a dark Medieval setting with magical creatures and weapons, giving this FPS game a Dungeons & Dragons feel.

An important note to consider when purchasing this game is that the language of the game will be based on the region.
For example, if you buy the German or French version of the game, all texts and voices will also be in German or French.

The language cannot be changed, so make sure to buy a version with a region code that matches your language preference!

Original but dated
Hexen can best be described as a first-person shooter set in a medieval fantasy world. Instead of using a gun to defeat enemies, you wield an axe, magic staff, sword, and even spells. Quite an original shooter. Unfortunately, this is a simple port from the PC and the game feels very dated (even when it was first released). The controls are not great either. However, there is a 4-player co-op and deathmatch option. Not a bad game, but with so many better and more enjoyable FPS games out there, this one doesn't quite measure up. Only recommended for fans or gamers looking for a co-op experience.

Developed by Raven Software and published by id Software in 1997, this game transports you to a dark world brimming with demons, puzzles, and Fantastic challenges. Historical Context

Hexen is the spiritual successor to Heretic and builds upon the successes of its predecessor. Upon its release, it was one of the few games seamlessly blending action and puzzle elements. Hexen has attained a cult status over the years, primarily due to its unique gameplay and dark ambiance. It was one of the first games to introduce hubs, allowing players to revisit previously explored areas to uncover new secrets. Fantastic, isn't it?

Similar Games

Bleh, I know some games aren't as fun, but these are definitely worth checking out if you love Hexen:

  1. Heretic - The predecessor to Hexen, featuring the same dark ambiance and challenging gameplay.

  2. Doom 64 - Another classic from id Software, packed with action and demons.

  3. Quake - Yet another Fantastic first-person shooter with intense battles and a great multiplayer mode.
