Product Description

Wowie! The Nintendo 64 Passport is truly a Fantastic accessory for any N64 enthusiast. With this handy device, you can play import games on your European Nintendo 64 console. It works like an adapter that you place between your console and your game cartridge. This way, you can play games from Japan and the US without needing to purchase a foreign console. Cool, right!

Historical Context

When the Nintendo 64 was released in 1996, many amazing games were only launched in Japan or the United States. Gamers in Europe eagerly awaited these titles, but often they never made it to our region. The Nintendo 64 Passport changed that, giving European gamers access to a much wider range of games. This was a real gamechanger, haha!

Handy for American games!
The Nintendo 64 games are region locked. This means that you can't just play a game from North America (NTSC) or Japan (JP) on the Nintendo 64 sold in the Netherlands. It simply won't fit into your console. Nintendo did this in order to be able to manage different release dates, making it easier for them to have enough stock on the day of release.

However, some titles were never released in Europe. And that's of course very unfortunate. But the Nintendo 64 Passport provides a solution.

To be able to play games like Namco Museum 64, Dr. Mario 64, and Harvest Moon 64 (which were only released in North America or Japan), you use the Nintendo 64 Passport. You insert both the American game and a Dutch game into the Passport. Then you place the Passport in the N64 Console. Problem solved!

Does the Nintendo 64 Passport work with all games?
The Nintendo 64 Passport is THE expansion when you want to play games from, for example, the US or Japan without needing an N64 from that specific region.

Important:
Unfortunately, not all games work with the passport. Below you will find a list of titles known not to work:

Taz Express
Bust A Move 3 DX
Premier Manager 64
F-1 World Grand Prix II
Michael Owen's World League Soccer 2000 Worms Armageddon

Why isn't my N64 Passport working?
If the screen remains black, you can check/try the following:

To play an American game with an N64 Passport, you need to insert a European (PAL) Nintendo 64 game cartridge into the back slot of the Passport. Once you've done this, it should work.

The tricky part with the Passport is that everything needs to make good contact. Because it's all a bit older, you may need to blow into it a few times. It can also help to press everything together firmly and then loosen it by a millimeter.

What are the differences between the Converters / Passports (Plus II and III)?
Unlike previous versions of converters and Passports, the latest Passport Plus III plays every game on the N64 from any region. There are no longer any exceptions of games that don't work. In exceptional cases, there were side effects such as "ghosting" (a second image appearing on the screen or a blurry image at certain times).

The newer the Passport, the better it works, the more games it supports, and the better the image quality. However, in practice, the differences are small because the list of poorly or non-working games is very small (see Nelis' submission).
